Specially Trained Pediatric Dentists
Children with special health care needs include those with any physical, developmental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment. These children may be at increased risk for oral disease throughout their lifetime, and it is therefore of utmost importance that they have an established dental home where they can receive appropriate preventive and routine care. Pediatric dentists are not only knowledgeable about various health concerns, but are also specially trained to provide comprehensive treatment to patients with special health care needs.
Dr. Barber is a trained specialist in Pediatric Dentistry. She received her graduate degree in this discipline from the University of Michigan. Prior to her pediatric residency, she completed a general practice residency at the University of Michigan Hospital, working with patients with a variety of serious health conditions who were not able to be treated in a traditional dental environment. An integral part of her training is the ability to provide routine dental care for patients with special needs. We are prepared to treat children of all ages who have physical, cognitive, emotional, or psychological disorders. Our practice includes a large population of patients with special needs, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, Down Syndrome, cleft lip and palate, cerebral palsy, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and many other conditions which can make dental care challenging. The training and experience of our doctors and staff allow us to successfully treat many patients who have previously had very limited options for their care or unpleasant experiences.
